Incoming Students Universities Represented COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog I have been crunching a lot of numbers lately and I thought it might be interesting to post a list of the universities/colleges our incoming MIA, MPA, and MPA-DP students attended.   In total, the applicants for fall 2009 obtained their undergraduate degree from 887 different universities/colleges. This number only includes the university where the degree was obtained if we include universities where students took additional classes (i.e. semesters abroad or graduate degrees) the list balloons up to well over 1,000.   The following are just the universities/colleges attended by those new students joining us this fall.   This list does not include every single incoming student, some students attended the same school and I tried to weed out the duplicate records. If you see your current school or Alma mater on the list, maybe you will have company next year.   If not, we love to see our list grow! Persuassive Essay, Draft 1 In the Pursuit of Good life In this very society, everyone is in the pursuit of good life. What is a good and happy life? There are many opinions as to what the so called â€Å"good life† is. Some people believe that the good life is attainable through education, while others believe that following a rule of conduct would leave you leading the good life. Some have a version of having all those basic survival necessities and millions of dollars. Still, there are many questions that arise when trying to answer the question, â€Å"what is the good life and how it can be attained? In my opinion, a good life is not about having lots of money or basic survival necessities. It is about having a good education along with good morals, believing in good karma or deeds, a healthy life, and having a very good relationship with your families, friends, and with neighbors. Why education? Education is the engine analogy for releasing understanding on a level that a llows one to live a healthier, happy, more productive lifestyle. Education is the base that holds back immoral activity, unhealthy habits, addictions and increases income, too. Without education you will not be respected in today’s society. To illustrate this, lets look at Malcolm X, one the most articulate and powerful leaders of black America during the 1960s. A street hustler convicted for robbery in 1946 and spent seven years in prison, where he educated himself and later emerged as the leading well known spokesman for black separatism (210). If, he hadn’t put himself into study, he would have been criminal and uneducated for the rest of his life and no one would have known who Malcolm X was. What makes the system turn in such a way that some people become educated and others don’t? It’s all about the desire to become something and determination. It is just as important to be a good human being as well as educated person to lead a happy life. In terms of religion, how does it help in leading good life? As a Buddhist, we believe in good and bad karma or deeds, and we are taught to be compassionate towards others who are in need. Sometimes, we feel good by helping others even if it was a small help. It doesn’t matter how big or small is. The only matter is help. All Religion teaches us in various forms to become a good human and show a good mode of conduct. Man must know how to make use of his religion for his betterment and for his happiness in a respectable way. Simply by following certain religious vows and precepts with blind faith, thinking that we are duty bound to observe them will not develop proper understanding. According to Buddhism, it is up to us to follow the advice through our own understanding and experience of what is good for us and others. Through trial and mistakes, we will learn to follow the advice which will give us just peace and happiness. One of the Tibetan monks do in depression is medita tion. This set our mind free from all those problems and depression. It is the practice of mental concentration leading ultimately through a sequence of stages to the final goal of spiritual freedom of nirvana. However, meditation must be done under supervision of teachers. At the same time, certain good qualities such as patience and understanding are important assets to help us lead a peaceful life. Good life also involves a happy married life. Every relationship is a whole-hearted commitment to support and to protect others in a group or community. Marriage plays a very important part in this strong web of relationships of giving support and protection. It is a relationship between people who are in love and who believe in commitment, equality, gentleness, generosity and dedication. According to Evan Wolfson, â€Å"What is Marriage†? â€Å"Marriage is a specific relationship of love and dedication to another person. It is how the families are united because of love. And it universally signifies a level of self-sacrifice and responsibility and a stage of life unlike any other† (99). In marriage, each partner develops a complementary role, giving strength and moral courage to one another. There must be no thought of either man or woman being superior; each is complementary to the other. People who consider only the physical aspects of love may think of acquiring another young patner. That type of love is animal love or lust. If a man really develops love as an expression of human concern for another being, he will not lay emphasis only on the external beauty and physical attractiveness of his partner. The beauty and attractiveness of his partner should be in his or her heart and mind. Almost everyday we hear people complaining about their marriages. Very seldom do we ear stories about a happy marriage. One of the major causes of marital problems is suspicion and mistrust. This leads to jealousy, anger, enmity, therefore many results in separation, suicide or even murder. So, it is very important to truthful relationship built on trust besides love. If a man can find a suitable and understanding wife and a woman can find a suitable and understanding husband, then their life would flow so smooth that it leads them to live a very happy and successful life. For some people money is very important as they believe happiness is just another component of the wealth. Yes, money can helps in obtaining material possessions, but it doesn’t buy you the close relationships held with friends, family, and lovers. Money doesn’t make you a whole person, in fact, if hinders you from the being your true self because of the fact that you have the power to obtain just about anything that can be bought. This mindset tends to make give off an attitude of arrogance and could result in disconnection from people, even from the ones you love. Happiness is found within a person self; through their own discoveries in everyday life as well as their relationships with others. Money is unable to buy you love, genuine relationship. In fact, money brings insecurities and tension of losing it. How would you lead a happy life with tension and insecurities of losing money? In conclusion, in order to lead a happy, one must consider to have a good and healthy life, education with good moral to hold back immoral activity, unhealthy habits, and addictions and, very trustful relationship with your love one’s. River and coastal flooding are the most frequently occurring natural disasters and are increasing in occurrence. Floods, once purely known as acts of God, are being rapidly enhanced by the works of humans. What Causes Floods? A flood occurs when an area that is normally dry gets submerged in water. If a flood happens in an empty field, then the damage from flooding may be relatively mild. If the flood happens in a city or a suburb, then flooding can cause catastrophic damage and take human lives. This may result in death of the original dream that the proprietor had. Also, running a capital intensive business unit may be quite more expensive than labor intensive businesses. Specialized skills. All these technological advancements require period update of the user skills. Most of the system users might find this quite tasking thus may remain reluctant to adopting the new technology in business. The technology might also require special handling equipment which may be expensive to use and maintain. Lack of personal touch in the business. Many of the people who oppose use of technology in business do it mostly due to loss of personal touch in the sales department. This may result in many customers losing trust in the business unit thus the actual says may decline. (Baron, 1996). These systems can be divided into three categories where each deals with a specific part in the supply chain. These categories are briefly discussed below. Conventional department management system. This system deals with the actual office work and mainly deals with records. This system is the one responsible for all record transactions ranging from updating, querying of data to report compilation and printing. It can be claimed as the main system on which the other entire logistics systems crop. This system extends to control activities where it monitors the forward logistics and reverse logistics. It serves as the main sales decision support mechanism thus acts as the control of sales department (Hugh, 2002). Warehousing management system. This system deals with monitoring the rates at which the products are fed into and fetched from the warehouse. It is part of the conventional department system which precisely deals with warehouse activities and then gives a feedback to the main system for report compilation. However, this system still has capability of report compilation (Hugh, 2002). Transport management system. This system may appear as only tracking system that is not part of the sales department but due to the transport of sales, it is part of the department. This system uses GPRS tracking systems which help locate the products on transit and help keep them secure. If the products are tampered with while on transit, the sales department can easily use this system to know how to sabotage took place (Hugh, 2002). Critically analyzing the use of technology in business sales department, there has been a reported success in the field. In fact more than 75% of business units that use logistics management systems have reported to be happy with the systems since once the required skills are acquired; the rest of the work is very simple. From a personal perspective, use of logistics systems is very important to a business unit. The function of monitoring can be very complicated and tasking but with the systems control component, the work is very simple. This section may require very many people but with the technology in place, a single person may carry out many tasks per unit time (Keller, 2006). The use also suffers some drawbacks which can be said to be rooted in the technological constraints. Many of the people using computers may know very little about them thus using a system to keep their business alive and give them a competitive advantage may be a dream almost out of hand. On personal opinion, this constraint makes people feel alienated thus makes people detached (Keller, 2006). A personal statement on this issue would be to support the use of technology in business enterprises. The massive appeal for artificial sugars and sweeteners in America started out in the 1970s and 1980s and has affected American eating habits ever since by its dominance as the most used form of sugar. Some have wondered if there is a relationship between the introduction of artificial sweeteners and the rise in American health problems. It is the cause of many illegal activities in the country. This study is geared towards finding the causes and effects of drug abuse in teenagers in Rio Claro. The process of distributing this questionnaire was done by simple random sampling. 00 % of the questionnaires were given to people that were teenagers on Saturday 10th December 2012 at the Rio Claro community centre. The questionnaire was an excellent means of obtaining data as the data collected was first hand and there was no third party handling the data so there was less room for tampering. The disadvantages of using this were that people may be dishonest and some may not return questionnaire. Thirty people were a sked to answer a questionnaire that consisted of 17 questions and thirty questionnaires were obtained at the end of the research. All the data was quantative. Secondary data was obtained via the internet, newspaper and books. The information obtained from the internet was used to obtain background information about the topic and to further answer the research question. Books were used to get proper definitions and to get the biological perspective of drug abuse. The data was helpful at it helped me to better understand the topic of drug abuse.
